Ouyang Minggao, academician: The flammable and explosive index of lithium iron phosphate in large capacity batteries is twice that of ternary ones.

On May 16th, the 4th New Energy Vehicles and Power Battery (CIBF2023 Shenzhen) International Communication Conference was grandly opened at the Shenzhen International Convention and Exhibition Center (New Hall).

In the opening ceremony section, the chairman of this conference, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ouyang Minggao, made a keynote speech. He said that generally, lithium iron phosphate batteries are considered relatively safe, and essentially, this is true for small lithium iron phosphate batteries. However, for large capacity batteries, the internal temperature can exceed 800 degrees, which exceeds the temperature for the decomposition of the positive electrode material of lithium iron phosphate.

For small-sized batteries, because there is a chain reaction with a partition, the positive electrode material may only start to decompose when it reaches more than 500 degrees, so small batteries are not within this range. But large ampere-hour batteries may reach 700-900 degrees, which may break through and cross this partition, causing the decomposition of the positive electrode material. Now the energy storage batteries are basically more than 300 ampere-hours, which is still very dangerous.

Looking again at the gas production of lithium iron phosphate, the produced hydrogen will gradually increase, and with the increase of SOC, the hydrogen content is more than 50%, which is also very dangerous. In addition, comparing the flammable and explosive risks of the two types of batteries, the flammable and explosive index of lithium iron phosphate batteries is twice that of ternary batteries. Ternary batteries are prone to thermal runaway and light themselves up. Lithium iron phosphate batteries cannot light themselves up, but the risk of gas explosion is higher than that of ternary batteries. Once it encounters sparks outside, it is more dangerous.

Our newly developed 600W, 1200W, and 2000W portable power stations are currently unique in the market and are the only ones that use manganese lithium small pouch cells. The reason for making this choice is precisely based on the ultimate pursuit of safety. By selecting manganese lithium, this special material to make small soft pack cells, it can minimize the potential safety risks and ensure that it can provide users with reliable safety guarantees in various usage scenarios, avoiding dangerous situations such as gas explosions that may occur in large single and large capacity lithium iron phosphate batteries, as well as the hidden dangers brought about by the self-thermal runaway of ternary batteries, thus creating a peaceful and worry-free user experience for users.
